Terragen 2 tutorials - input needed!

Fri Jun 12, 2009, 7:19 AM
Hey all, been a long time since I posted an update. I've been working my tail off and hope to be a bit more regular around these parts in the not-too-distant-future.

I was looking around the other day and did a search for "Terragen 2 Tutorial" to see what was around nowadays. I was surprised to see mine was the most popular search result, both here on deviantART and Google as well! I really have been gone a while. :O

This got me to thinking...I made that one (and its successor) as a quick simple guide for people who had never used the program before. There are many more techniques and advanced methods that could be shown, and I'm considering creating more tutorials at some point. I'd like to revamp some of the common "looks" that tutorials have and spruce them up a bit, as well as addressing common areas of confusion or lacking documentation.

Here's where you come in: I need input! What would you like to see in TG2 tutorials? What do you wish to learn?

That's all for now - have fun and be devious! :boogie:

I am a visual effects artist, specializing in digital environments and compositing. I have an AA in Audio/Video Production and a certificate in Digital Cinema, and currently work as a freelancer on independent productions, web projects, and even the occasional feature film.

Aside from a career, however, I just love to create things and work on projects with teams that are passionate about what they do. I love to write and have a couple books in the works along with a host of short stories. For more on my personal projects or my professional info please visit www.ckhicks.com

Btw i wanted to ask you, in your opinion which is a better terrain making software? Terragen 2 or Vue?
Hard to say, it really depends on what you're trying to do and how you plan to use it. Both are quite powerful

Terragen 2 is incredible, and I'm constantly amazed at how nice the renderer treats every aspect of a scene. The terrain tools and atmospheric control are awesome, and the powerful interface for every technical detail leaves very few limits. The biggest things I've run into is the learning curve, along with integrating it with other apps.

Vue is awesome because you can integrate it with apps like Maya, Cinema 4D, Max, Lightwave, Softimage, and so forth. The power of this app is amazing, and the out-of-the-box readiness is not to be taken for granted. Sometimes it can have an obvious CG look, however, so overcoming this is probably the main caveat I've seen for Vue.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask questions anytime. :)
